Kruger National Park

overview

Kruger National Park

Kruger is South Africa’s best-known safari destination for good reason. Vast, varied and wildlife-rich, it offers a classic bush experience on a grand scale, from river systems and granite koppies to mopane veld and open savanna. It can be explored in many ways — self-drive, guided lodge stay, or as part of a broader itinerary through adjoining private reserves.
Reasons to Visit
Kruger National Park covers nearly two million hectares of bushveld in the northeast of South Africa, making it one of the largest protected areas on the continent. All of the Big 5 are present in significant numbers: an estimated 1,500 lion, 1,000 leopard, 17,000 elephant and 5,000 white rhino, alongside more than 500 bird species. Few places in Africa give you access to this breadth and density of wildlife within a single destination.
Kruger is one of the few great African wildlife areas that can be experienced on a self-drive basis, with an extensive network of tar and gravel roads, well-maintained rest camps, and the freedom to plan your own route. The park is large enough that the drive from south to north, watching the dense bushveld gradually give way to mopane woodland, is itself a significant part of what it offers.
Beyond the headline species, Kruger’s species list is considerable: 147 mammals, 507 birds, 114 reptiles and more than 1,500 plant species have been recorded within its boundaries. Walking trails, guided night drives and fly-camping options within the park add further dimension to what is, by any measure, one of the most biodiverse protected areas in Africa.
