Luxury Train Safari

There is a particular romance to travelling through Africa by rail. Two trains define luxury rail travel in southern Africa, and both are worth understanding in detail. The Rovos Rails and the Blue Train. Rovos Rail is regarded as one of the most luxurious train journeys in the world. Operating from its private station in Pretoria, Rovos offers a range of routes across southern and eastern Africa aboard beautifully restored Edwardian coaches. Spacious suites, outstanding meals, and the observation car, an open-ended carriage at the rear of the train, offers an unobstructed view of the landscape passing behind you.

The flagship Cape Town to Pretoria route takes three days, passing through the Hex River Valley, the Karoo and the Kimberley diamond fields. For those with more time, Rovos operates longer expeditions, including a Cape Town to Dar es Salaam journey and a biennial Cape to Cairo expedition that is, quite simply, one of the great train journeys on earth.

The Blue Train offers a more streamlined luxury experience on the same Cape Town to Pretoria route, completing the journey in two days, also accommodating travellers in luxury cabins and a 24-hour butler service. For those combining a train journey with a broader South African itinerary, the Blue Train’s shorter duration makes it a natural and seamlessly integrated addition.

Beyond South Africa, rail experiences are available in Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana and Mozambique, each offering a different perspective on the landscapes they pass through. Rovos Rail’s journey to Victoria Falls, departing twice monthly, is a particularly compelling option for those who want to combine the famous “Falls” with the romance of arriving by train.
