Walking Safari

The bush becomes something entirely different on foot. You notice things you would never have seen from a seat. Like the fresh tracks left in the soil, or the alarm call of a bird that tells you something is moving nearby. A walking safari is not an alternative to a game drive. It is a completely different way of experiencing the African Bush.

THE WALKING SAFARI EXPERIENCE

Walking safaris take a variety of forms, and are often combined with game drives or photographic safaris and are tailored to individuals, families and groups. Our walking safaris adapt to what you are looking for and where you are travelling. Shorter guided bush walks led by experienced guides, typically two to three hours, are available at most of the lodges we work with, and focus on the smaller details of the ecosystem, like tracks, insects, plants, and birds.

In contrast, slightly longer walking experiences aim for safe tracking and viewing of larger game on foot, including lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos, and primates such as gorillas and chimpanzees. Longer walking safaris, spanning three to seven days, offer a more comprehensive walking experience. You will explore the bush on foot over several days, camping in fly camps along the way or returning to a luxurious lodge each evening.

Those seeking the best walking experiences on the continent should consider Zambia’s South Luangwa and Kafue National Parks, which are widely regarded as the home of the walking safari, and the guides who lead these walks are considered some of the best on the continent.
