THE PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARI EXPERIENCE

A photographic safari is built around a different set of priorities than a standard game drive. Positioning matters more. Timing matters more. The ability to anticipate animal behaviour, to read the light and to make rapid creative decisions in the field matters enormously. These are skills that our specialist photographic guides have spent their careers developing, and they are passionate about sharing them with guests of every experience level.

Our photographic guides travel privately with you for the duration of your safari, which means the vehicle, the schedule and the direction of each drive are shaped entirely around the photographic opportunities available. No compromises, no rushing, no other guests with different priorities. When the light is extraordinary and the subject is perfect, you stay until the moment has fully passed.

Before your departure, your guide will facilitate a one on one online tutorial to prepare you for the field covering your specific equipment, your current level of ability and the kinds of opportunities you are most likely to encounter on your particular itinerary.

Our specialist photographic guides will teach you about covering the exposure triangle, composition, wildlife portraits, bird photography, animals in their environment, action & interaction, macro, silhouettes, panning, sunsets & sunrise, landscapes, night photography with spotlight (backlighting and side lighting), and stars and long exposure.

The lodges and camps we work with are selected in part for the quality of their photographic infrastructure, modified vehicles with low shooting angles, bean bags, good access to key wildlife areas and guides who understand the specific needs of photographers in the field.

Whilst on a photographic safari, you will learn four important fundamentals discussed below:

TECHNIQUE AND TECHNICALITY

Understanding your equipment is the foundation of everything. Prior to departure, your guide will work with you one on one to ensure you are confident with the technical aspects of your camera (exposure, shutter speed, aperture, ISO) so that when the moment arrives, the mechanics are instinctive and your full attention is on the subject in front of you.

PRESENCE

Photography is a creative process filled with excitement and discovery but this can sometimes overshadow the reason you are in nature in the first place. Our guides place a strong emphasis on being present, being ethical and being genuinely connected to the environment around you.

ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR & DEVELOPING YOUR CREATIVE EYE

Knowing when to press the shutter is more important than knowing how. Our photographic guides understand animal behaviour and use that knowledge to position you for images that go beyond the record shot. Recognising an opportunity before it fully reveals itself is a skill that develops over years in the field. Travelling with a guide who already has it accelerates that process considerably.

POST-PROCESSING

A great image in the field is only the beginning. Our guides have a thorough working knowledge of Lightroom and the post-processing techniques that allow you to realise the full potential of what you captured without misrepresenting the reality of what you saw. This is a subtle art in its own right, and one that our guides are happy to work through with you during quieter moments on safari.

Lion

Black Rhino
