Chimpanzee Trekking

Spending time with Chimpanzees is one of the most gripping wildlife experiences that Africa has to offer. Chimpanzee trekking is generally more accessible than gorilla trekking, credited to chimps’ active nature. Treks are typically shorter and less physically demanding than gorilla treks, though the terrain in some forests remains challenging.

THE CHIMPANZEE TREKKING EXPERIENCE

What makes the experience so engaging is not just the proximity you get to the chimps, but their behaviour. Chimpanzees are constantly doing something worth watching. A hunt, a dispute, a moment of grooming or play, the complex social negotiations of a highly intelligent animal living in community. The primary destinations for chimpanzee trekking are Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda, each offering a distinct forest environment and a different quality of experience.

Uganda’s Kibale National Park is widely regarded as the finest chimpanzee trekking destination in Africa. Kibale boasts one of the highest densities of chimpanzees in Africa and an established habituation programme that allows for close (and natural) encounters. The Budongo Forest, also in Uganda, offers a quieter and less-visited alternative. In Tanzania, Gombe Stream National Park, made famous by Jane Goodall’s decades of research, and the Mahale Mountains offer chimpanzee trekking on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest, one of the oldest rainforests in Africa, rounds out a compelling set of options. It is worth noting that there are currently between 170,000 and 300,000 chimpanzees remaining in the wild, and their numbers are in decline. Habitat loss and disease are the primary threats, and the eco-tourism that responsible trekking generates plays a meaningful role in funding the protection of the forests they depend on.
