Every great safari begins with a single conversation. Whenever you’re ready, we’re here.

See Africa the way we see it, through the eyes of people who never stopped looking.

We only work in wild places we’re committed to protecting. Here’s what that looks like in practice.

Honest answers to the questions worth asking before you go.

There's a particular freedom that comes with falling asleep to the sounds of the African wilderness—the distant call of a hyena, the rustle of nocturnal movement, the weight of the Milky Way directly above you. Star beds offer something lodges can't: complete removal from walls and roofs, a direct relationship with the wild. Some sit on raised platforms overlooking salt pans that turn pink at sunset. Others are built into tree canopies with 360-degree views of Laikipia Plains. A few float above open grasslands in Big Five reserves, where you're safe but genuinely immersed. Each one trades conventional comfort for something deeper—isolation, starlight, and the knowledge that you're sleeping in the heart of the ecosystem you came to experience. Here are Africa's best star bed experiences, and what makes each one distinct.

Best of Africa’s Star Beds

One of the most freeing aspects of being on safari is the frequent feeling of isolation. From looking out into the private wildlife reserves from your plunge pool or outdoor shower to game drives in open-top game viewers on balmy evenings, the seclusion often makes one feel content.

There is nothing like falling asleep to the sounds of the African wilderness, especially if you are sleeping under the stars in one of the lodges open-air bedrooms or star-beds – completely removed from anyone else. The romantic backdrop of the milky way and the eerie call of a hyena in the cool night is soul-stirring.

Here are some of our top picks for star beds in Africa…
